Choose the right torque wrench
The right torque wrench ensures precision, safety and efficiency in heavy-duty installations. Here we guide you through the differences between hydraulic, pneumatic, electric and battery-powered systems – and how to choose the right tool for your application.
What type of torque wrench
Torque wrenches are available in several designs depending on requirements for power, precision and mobility.
Hydraulic : The highest power for heavy industry. Used in heavy applications where high torque is required, for example on flanges, foundations, turbines and steel structures.
Pneumatic : Reliable and suitable for production environments where air loops are already installed.
Electrical: Programmable with documentation. Offers programmable torque control and high repeatability, making them ideal for quality assured assembly lines.
Battery: Mobility and precision for field work.
Provides maximum flexibility in the field, with enough power to replace both pneumatic and electric models in many applications. The choice of model is guided by torque requirements, work environment and how often the tool will be used.
What determines the right choice for your application?
The right torque wrench depends on several technical factors. The most important is the torque range required for the bolted joint – each tool has an optimal working range. The working environment plays a big role: hydraulics are best for heavy industrial assemblies, while pneumatic tools are suitable where the air is clean and the pressure is stable. For field service or difficult-to-access installations, battery-powered torque wrenches are the right choice. Material and bolt size also affect the need for reaction arms, fit, power sleeves and safety distances. Additional factors are access to electricity, air or a pump, as well as requirements for repeatability and documentation in production. Torctech helps you dimension tools and accessories according to your specific conditions.
Safety and calibration
To ensure correct tightening and avoid damage from overload, regular calibration is essential. Most torque wrenches should be calibrated at least once every 12 months , or more frequently in continuous production. Each tool has a torque curve that shows its tolerances at different loads, and this should be compared to the requirements specification for your applications. Tool wear , for example on the reaction arm, gears or drive square, can affect both precision and safety. Torctech offers complete service, calibration and function check where the performance of the tools is tested, adjusted and documented. This ensures that your torque wrenches deliver the right force every time.
Documentation and quality assurance
In modern industry , documented quality is often required for every torque tightening. Electric and some battery-powered torque wrenches offer features for logging torque values , number of cycles and any deviations. This is important for traceability, quality assurance and compliance with industry standards such as ISO 9001, ISO 6789 and ISO 5393. Repeatability and tolerances can be verified through calibration protocols and ongoing monitoring. Torctech offers systems that integrate tool documentation with your internal processes and ensure that you always have up-to-date protocols, whether you work in energy, offshore, manufacturing or heavy industry.
