What is a hollow cylinder?

A hollow cylinder is a type of hydraulic cylinder with a through hole in the piston. This hole allows wires, rods, cables or other media to be threaded straight through the cylinder, providing a flexible and versatile solution in applications where both pressure (or pull) and a through space are required. At Torctech, we notice that hollow cylinders are often a key component in industrial applications where assembly, disassembly, lifting or tensioning torque require this through opening.

How does a hollow cylinder work?

Like other hydraulic cylinders, hollow cylinders are based on the principle that oil pressure from a hydraulic pump causes a piston to move in the cylinder tube. The difference is that the center of the piston is hollow and is adapted for applications where you need to pull or push around a through object. When you apply hydraulic pressure (up to, for example, 700 bar, which is a common standard in the industry) a force is created that pushes the piston outwards or inwards, depending on whether the cylinder is single-acting or double-acting.

  • Single-acting hollow cylinders : The piston actively moves in only one direction (usually out) and returns via
    spring return or external force.
  • Double-acting hollow cylinders : The piston can move actively both outwards and inwards by pressurizing two
    different ports, providing increased control and speed in both directions.

Double-acting hollow cylinders – DH series from Larzep Hydraulic

Our DH series double-acting hollow cylinders are designed to meet most industrial pressing, pulling and lifting needs. With capacities from 30 – 150 tons and strokes from 38 – 250 mm, these cylinders offer both power and flexibility for tough applications.

Manufactured from steel or aluminium and with a maximum working pressure of 700 bar, these cylinders are built to perform under high demands. They are comparable to the Enerpac RRH series and Powerteam RH series, but offer a cost-effective and reliable alternative.
